Hi, my name’s Jeff. I like Roller Coasters
and Monster Movies. Nice to meet you.
I find talking about myself quite difficult, so I’ll go over the basic facts about myself and try not to bore you too much.
So there I was, surrounded by ninjas on a snowy mountaintop...Oh wait, false start. One time I was battling a two headed tiger in the Keebler Elf tree...crap, that’s not right either. Okay, here’s the real deal. I was born in 1977 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and as soon as I could pick up a pencil I was drawing. Before long I graduated from doodling on walls with permanent marker to drawing in class. Test papers, homework, pop quizes — no document was safe from my artistic adornment.
I constantly heard threats from my mother implying that if she were to see one more test paper with a superhero on it, she would unceremoniously end my young life. Aside from the occasional death threat, my parents were as supportive and caring as anyone could ask. They were always willing to make the journeys to various comic book conventions and see "all those weirdos".
During this time I was collecting comics heavily. Now I’m not one of those guys who buys a comic and seals it for prosperity. No, I was one of those kids who would roll it up in my back pocket and read it over and over again. Comics to me weren't an investment, they were stories I loved to read. I found myself gravitating toward Marvel comics, especially X-Men. I was on board during the Jim Lee/Chris Claremont years and I look back on that time period fondly.
In high school I took several commercial art courses and won several awards for design, including one at a state wide level..yay me. While surviving the daily trials and tribulations of high school life, I met a young woman named Rebecca. She mentioned that she needed a ride to school with a smile that no one could refuse. And since I had a totally kick-ass 85 Blazer with no A/C and torn up leather seats I knew I could help her out. So like a gentlemen, I obliged.
Every morning consisted of picking up the beautiful young lady and falling a little more in love with her each day. After two years of dating we were married at the young age of 18. A mere week before our wedding I was laid off from my job...that was a pretty awful day. But I held my chin up and went out the very next morning to get a new job.
I took my portfolio to a place I heard needed an artist. After listening to the boss go on and on about things I had no clue about (trap? spot color? seperations? what is this stuff?) I showed him a few pages of my silly superhero drawings and I got the job...and had the gaul in the interview to ask to start a week later since I was taking my honeymoon in Mexico. Man, that was brass move. But it worked out. Becci and I had a great time in Mexico saying “gracious” and watching people do a weird dance called “The Macarena”. When we got back I started that job and I’m still there today, so I guess I haven’t screwed up too badly.
Fast forward 10+ years and today we are still happily married with a son, Logan and two lazy cats. She is my best friend and as far as my art goes, she doesn’t let me get away with substandard work. If she points out something that looks wrong, it usually is. Of course, I mumble under my breath for having to redo a certain part of the drawing, but it always looks better afterward.
My major artistsic influences are Adam Hughes, Frank Cho, Jim Lee and Burne Hogarth. I am currently art director for a promotional products firm and I am continually working on my pencilling skills, always striving to grow and learn as an artist. Hopefully, one day I will finally reach the elusive goal of drawing comics for a living.
So I guess I’ve rambled on enough. Take care and please make sure to wear comfortable underwear. I can’t stress that enough.
